Fine Pitch or Standard Pitch: Which LED Wall Actually Pays Off in Bengaluru

P1.8 or P2.5? P3 or P4? Here's how Bengaluru buyers should actually decide between fine pitch and standard pitch LED walls.

Fine Pitch or Standard Pitch: Which LED Wall Actually Pays Off in Bengaluru

Every buyer asks the same question once they've seen a quote: why does a smaller pixel pitch cost so much more? And is it actually worth it for your lobby, showroom or control room? The honest answer depends on how close people stand, not on which number sounds more premium.

The short version

  • Pixel pitch is the distance between LED centres in millimetres — smaller pitch means more pixels per sq ft and a higher per-sq-ft price.
  • Fine pitch (P1.2 to P1.8) is for viewers standing 1.5 to 3 m away — control rooms, boardrooms, flagship retail.
  • Standard pitch (P2.5 to P4) is for viewers 3 m and beyond — lobbies, auditoriums, large showroom walls.
  • Use viewing distance, not budget or trend, to pick the pitch. Check actual options on the /led-configurator.
  • Outdoor walls almost never need fine pitch — viewing distances outdoors are usually 10 m or more.

What pixel pitch actually measures

Pixel pitch is the centre-to-centre distance between two adjacent LEDs, measured in millimetres. A P1.8 wall has pixels spaced 1.8 mm apart. A P4 wall has them 4 mm apart. Smaller pitch means more LEDs packed into the same panel, which means sharper images up close — and more components, more driver ICs, and a higher price per sq ft.

This is the single spec that decides how close someone can stand before they start seeing individual dots instead of a picture. Get it wrong and you've either overpaid for sharpness nobody notices, or installed a wall that looks pixelated from the front row.

The viewing distance rule

A simple rule we use on every site survey: minimum comfortable viewing distance in metres is roughly equal to the pixel pitch in millimetres. So a P2.5 wall wants viewers at 2.5 m or more. A P1.8 wall is comfortable from 1.8 m. Stand closer than that and the image starts to look grainy rather than photographic.

1.8 mmfine pitch spacing — works from 1.8 m viewing distance
2.5 mmcommon indoor standard pitch — works from 2.5 m
4 mmtypical lobby/auditorium pitch — works from 4 m and beyond

Where fine pitch earns its price

Fine pitch makes sense where people genuinely stand close to the screen. A boardroom table 2 m from the wall. A jewellery counter where customers lean in to see the stones in 4K. A command centre where operators read data off a wall 2.5 m away for eight hours a day. In these rooms, a coarser pitch looks visibly blocky and undermines the exact impression you're trying to create.

Fine pitch is also the right call for camera work — virtual production backdrops, news studios, anything being filmed in close-up, where pixel structure shows up on camera even if the human eye wouldn't mind it.

Where standard pitch is the smarter buy

If your audience is 4 m away or more — a mall atrium, a college auditorium, a corporate lobby wall viewed from reception — standard pitch delivers an identical visual result to fine pitch, at a lower per-sq-ft price and with simpler, more serviceable modules. Spending on fine pitch here doesn't buy you a sharper picture; it buys you a bigger invoice.

Indoor vs outdoor pitch logic is different

Indoors, pitch is chosen almost entirely on viewing distance. Outdoors, viewing distance is usually large enough — 10 m, 20 m, sometimes 100 m for a tall facade — that fine pitch is rarely needed. Our outdoor panels run P2.5 to P4, IP65 at the front and IP54 at the rear, built for Bengaluru's sun and rain rather than close inspection. Brightness, not pitch, is the bigger decision outdoors: our outdoor walls go up to 4,500 nits with auto-dimming after dark, enough to read clearly in daylight without needing anything brighter.

The real trade-off

Pitch is about distance, not prestige.

The sharpest wall in the room is wasted if nobody stands close enough to notice.

How we size pitch during the site survey

  1. Measure. We record the actual distance from the wall to where people will stand or sit — not the room's longest dimension.
  2. Check the content. Text-heavy dashboards and fine detail need tighter pitch than video or brand loops.
  3. Factor camera use. If the wall will be filmed up close for social content or livestream backdrops, we lean a size finer than the distance rule alone suggests.
  4. Confirm on the configurator. You can model different pitches and sizes for your exact wall dimensions on the /led-configurator before we quote.
Good to know. Pitch doesn't change our warranty or cabinet type. Every PixelSpot wall, fine pitch or standard, ships with the same 2-year pixel-to-pixel onsite warranty and front- or rear-service cabinet choice, assembled and burn-in tested at our Jalahalli East facility.

A quick gut-check before you decide

  • Will anyone routinely stand within 2 m of this wall? If yes, consider fine pitch.
  • Is this wall mainly viewed from across a lobby, hall or street? Standard pitch will look identical and cost less.
  • Is the content mostly video and brand motion rather than fine text? Standard pitch handles this well.
  • Is the wall outdoor or semi-outdoor? Prioritise an outdoor-rated panel and brightness over pixel pitch.

Pixel pitch is a distance calculation dressed up as a technology choice. Measure where your audience actually stands, match the pitch to that number, and you'll land on a wall that looks sharp for the right reasons — not an expensive one that nobody stands close enough to appreciate. Run your room's dimensions through the /led-configurator and check real numbers on /led-wall-price before you commit to a spec.
