Brightness: The Biggest Differentiator

This is the single most important difference. An outdoor LED wall must fight direct sunlight, which means it needs 5,000 to 10,000+ nits of brightness to remain visible. An indoor wall only needs 800 to 1,500 nits because the ambient light is controlled.

Running an indoor panel outdoors in sunlight will result in a completely washed-out, unreadable image. Conversely, running an outdoor panel indoors at full brightness will be painfully glaring and waste electricity.

A client once installed indoor P2.5 panels on a south-facing shopfront window. By noon, the content was invisible. We replaced it with outdoor P4 at 6,000 nits — the difference was night and day. — PixelSpot Installation Team

Weatherproofing & IP Rating

Indoor Panels: IP30 – IP43

Indoor panels have minimal weatherproofing. They are designed for climate-controlled environments. IP30 means protection from objects larger than 2.5mm but zero water protection.

Outdoor Panels: IP54 – IP68

Outdoor panels must survive rain, dust storms, humidity, and temperature swings:

  • IP54 — Dust-protected, splash-proof. Minimum for covered outdoor areas
  • IP65 — Dust-tight, withstands water jets. Standard for most outdoor billboards
  • IP67 — Can survive brief submersion. For ground-mounted or flood-prone areas
  • IP68 — Full submersion rated. Extreme environments

In India's climate — heavy monsoons, 45°C+ summers, high coastal humidity — IP65 is the minimum we recommend for fully exposed outdoor installations.

Pixel Pitch & Viewing Distance

Indoor: Fine Pitch (P1.2 to P4)

Indoor walls are viewed from close distances — sometimes as near as 1–2 meters. Fine pixel pitches ensure the image looks sharp and individual pixels are not visible.

The rule of thumb: minimum viewing distance (meters) ≈ pixel pitch (mm).

Outdoor: Standard Pitch (P4 to P16)

Outdoor viewers are typically 5–200+ meters away. At these distances, fine pixel pitch is wasted.

  • P4 – P5: Storefronts, building facades (5–15m viewing)
  • P6 – P8: Billboard advertising, stadium perimeters (10–50m viewing)
  • P10 – P16: Highway billboards, large-venue scoreboards (50–200m+ viewing)

Construction & Weight

Indoor Cabinets

Indoor cabinets prioritize thin profiles and light weight: slim depth (40–80mm), light weight (8–18 kg/m²), precise flatness for seamless tiling, and front-serviceability.

Outdoor Cabinets

Outdoor cabinets prioritize durability and weather sealing: greater depth (100–200mm), heavier (25–50 kg/m²), sealed edges with O-ring gaskets, and rear-access maintenance doors.

The weight difference matters enormously for mounting. An outdoor wall may weigh 3–4× more per square meter.

Cooling & Thermal Management

Indoor: Passive Cooling

Indoor walls rely on natural convection. No fans means zero fan noise — important for boardrooms, worship halls, and studios.

Outdoor: Active Cooling

Outdoor walls face direct sun heating and generate their own heat from 5,000+ nit output. Active cooling is essential: internal fans, air conditioning units for extreme heat, and heat sinks on the rear surface.

Thermal management directly impacts LED lifespan. Every 10°C increase in operating temperature roughly halves the LED's life expectancy.

Common Applications

Indoor LED Walls

  • Corporate lobbies & boardrooms
  • Retail showrooms
  • Houses of worship
  • Control rooms & command centers
  • TV studios & event stages
  • Museums & galleries

Outdoor LED Walls

  • Highway & roadside billboards
  • Building facades
  • Stadium perimeters & scoreboards
  • Shopping mall exteriors
  • Fuel stations & QSR drive-throughs
  • Transportation hubs

How to Decide: Indoor or Outdoor?

  1. Is it exposed to rain, dust, or direct sunlight? → Outdoor
  2. Is the closest viewer within 3 meters? → Indoor (fine pitch)
  3. Does it need to be visible in broad daylight? → Outdoor (5,000+ nits)
  4. Is the mounting surface rated for 30+ kg/m²? → If no, indoor only
  5. Is noise a concern? → Indoor (fanless) preferred

Conclusion

Indoor and outdoor LED video walls serve fundamentally different purposes. Choosing correctly saves money, maximizes visual impact, and ensures your investment lasts.
